"Accumulate Positive Emotions" is a DBT skill divided into short-term and long-term strategies aimed at increasing the frequency of positive experiences. This skill focuses on enhancing immediate joy and building a life that inherently produces more happiness, contributing to a "life worth living."
Description
In the short-term, the strategy involves actively engaging in simple, pleasurable activities each day. These activities can range from enjoying a favorite hobby, like reading or gardening, to relishing small moments of joy, such as sharing a laugh with a friend or watching a sunset. The aim is to consciously incorporate these joyful experiences into daily life, which can immediately uplift one’s mood and provide brief respites from stress or emotional discomfort.
The long-term approach requires a more strategic and reflective process. It starts with identifying personal values and determining which of these are most significant to the individual. Once a value is selected to focus on, specific, measurable goals related to this value are set. This could involve career advancement, deepening personal relationships, or pursuing educational achievements. For each goal, actionable steps are defined, and individuals are encouraged to begin with at least one action step immediately. This long-term investment in aligning one’s daily actions with their deeper values ensures that positive events become more frequent and sustainable over time, fostering enduring happiness and satisfaction.
