Focus on a Scent

Group Mindfulness

Experience

Introduction to Group:

"Hello, everyone. Today, we will engage in a mindfulness practice centered around our sense of smell. This exercise, 'Focus on a Scent,' will help us enhance our awareness of the present moment through the olfactory senses. It’s a simple yet powerful way to ground ourselves and connect deeply with our environment. Let's begin."

Instructions for Leading the Group:

  1. Prepare the Scent: "Before we start, please ensure everyone has access to a scented item. This could be anything like a herb, a flower, a spice, or a scented oil. If you're using essential oils or scented candles, please have them ready."

  2. Find a Comfortable Position: "Find a comfortable seated position and make sure you’re relaxed. Rest your hands on your lap, holding your scented item."

  3. Close Your Eyes: "Close your eyes or lower your gaze. This will help you focus solely on the sense of smell without visual distractions."

  4. Take Initial Deep Breaths: "Begin by taking a few deep breaths to relax. Inhale slowly through your nose, hold briefly, and exhale through your mouth. Feel any tension melting away with each exhale."

  5. Introduce the Scent: "Now, bring the scented item close to your nose. Take a slow, deliberate inhale and let the aroma fill your senses. Notice the first impressions of the scent. Is it strong or subtle? Sweet or spicy?"

  6. Explore the Scent Further: "Continue to breathe in the scent gently. With each inhalation, explore the layers or notes within the aroma. See if the scent changes intensity or quality as you continue to smell it."

  7. Notice Body Reactions: "Pay attention to any physical or emotional reactions you experience. Does this scent bring back memories? How does your body feel in response to this aroma? Observe any feelings or sensations that arise."

  8. Reflect Quietly: "Spend a few moments in quiet reflection, continuing to breathe in the scent. Each time your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the aroma."

  9. Gradually Return: "When you’re ready, slowly move the scented item away and return to normal breathing. Take a few deep breaths and prepare to bring your attention back to the group."

  10. Open Your Eyes and Discuss: "Gently open your eyes when you feel ready. If comfortable, share your experience with the group—any thoughts, feelings, or memories that the scent evoked."

"Thank you for participating in this Focus on a Scent exercise. Using our sense of smell can be a refreshing way to anchor ourselves in the moment and enhance our mindfulness practice."
