Notice Colors
Group Mindfulness
Experience
Introduction to Group:
"Welcome everyone. Today, we will engage in a mindfulness exercise called 'Notice Colors.' This practice encourages us to sharpen our visual perception and become more aware of our surroundings by focusing on the colors around us. It's a great way to bring our attention into the present and appreciate the beauty of the ordinary. Let's prepare to explore our colorful world."
Instructions for Leading the Group:
Find a Comfortable Position: "Please find a comfortable seated or standing position. Ensure you have a good view of your surroundings."
Close Your Eyes: "Start by closing your eyes for a moment. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself. Inhale slowly, and exhale completely, allowing your body to relax."
Open Your Eyes: "Gently open your eyes and let them rest softly on the space in front of you. Try not to focus on any particular object just yet, just allow your gaze to soften."
Observe the Colors: "Now, slowly begin to notice the colors around you. Start with the most dominant color you can see. Observe its shade, intensity, and the way light affects its appearance."
Shift Your Focus: "Gradually shift your focus to other colors in your field of vision. Notice the variety of shades and hues. Observe how colors interact with each other—how they contrast or complement each other."
Reflect on Your Feelings: "As you observe these colors, reflect on the feelings they evoke in you. Do certain colors make you feel calm, happy, or energized? Try to connect your emotional responses with specific colors."
Notice Subtle Colors: "Look for subtle or overlooked colors now. Perhaps the slight tint in a shadow, or a faint color reflected on a surface. Appreciate the complexity and richness of the color palette around you."
Close Your Eyes Again: "Close your eyes once more and visualize the colors you’ve just observed. Try to recall them in your mind’s eye, remembering the emotions they stirred in you."
Deep Breath and Conclude: "Take another deep breath in, and as you exhale, let go of the visualizations and bring your focus back to the present. When you’re ready, open your eyes."
"Thank you for participating in this Notice Colors exercise. I hope this practice has helped you appreciate the vibrant world around us and brought you a sense of joy and presence."
