Observe Thoughts

Group Mindfulness

Experience

Introduction to Group:

"Welcome, everyone. In today's session, we'll engage in a mindfulness exercise called Observing Thoughts. This practice involves noticing our thoughts as they arise, without judgment or engagement, simply letting them pass like clouds in the sky. This helps us understand the transient nature of our thoughts and reduces their impact on our emotions and reactions. Let’s begin."

Instructions for Leading the Group:

  1. Find a Comfortable Position: "Please find a comfortable seated position. Sit with your back straight, yet relaxed, and place your hands gently on your lap."

  2. Close Your Eyes: "I invite you now to close your eyes or lower your gaze. This will help you turn your attention inward and minimize external distractions."

  3. Focus on Your Breath: "Let's start by focusing on our breathing. Take a deep breath in, hold it for a moment, and then exhale slowly. Repeat this a few times to settle into the moment and relax your body."

  4. Shift Focus to Thoughts: "Now, gently shift your focus from your breath to your thoughts. Observe any thoughts that come into your mind. They could be about the past, the future, or completely random."

  5. Notice Thoughts Without Engagement: "As you notice each thought, imagine it as a leaf floating down a stream or a cloud passing in the sky. Acknowledge its presence but let it drift away without following it or engaging with it."

  6. Return to Breath if Distracted: "If you find yourself getting caught up in your thoughts or if you start to feel overwhelmed, gently guide your focus back to your breathing. Use your breath as an anchor to bring you back to the present."

  7. Reflect on the Experience: "After a few minutes, reflect on the experience of observing your thoughts. Notice if the space between thoughts becomes longer or if the thoughts start to slow down."

  8. Gradually Return: "Slowly bring your awareness back to your breath. Take a few more deep breaths. When you’re ready, gently open your eyes and bring your attention back to the room."

"Thank you for participating in this exercise. Observing our thoughts can be powerful in learning not to be swayed by every thought that arises, helping us respond more calmly and wisely to situations."
