Distress Tolerance Skills: Reality Acceptance Skills

Turning the Mind

Overview

Turning the Mind is the practice of consciously choosing to accept reality and commit to accepting it again whenever the mind drifts away from acceptance.

Description

Turning the Mind is a crucial skill in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that involves repeatedly making the conscious choice to turn toward acceptance whenever the mind wanders into non-acceptance. This skill is about recognizing when you are resisting reality and gently guiding your mind back to a state of acceptance. It's not a one-time decision but an ongoing process of recommitting to acceptance each time resistance arises. By practicing Turning the Mind, individuals can cultivate a more consistent and enduring sense of peace and resilience.

This skill helps in reducing emotional suffering by addressing the root cause of distress—resistance to reality. Each time you notice yourself struggling against the facts of a situation, Turning the Mind involves pausing, acknowledging the resistance, and making a deliberate choice to accept reality as it is. This process, while simple in concept, requires ongoing awareness and effort, fostering a more accepting and peaceful mindset over time.

When to Use

Turning the Mind is particularly useful in situations where you find yourself repeatedly resisting or struggling to accept a difficult reality. It helps in maintaining a state of acceptance, especially during ongoing or recurring challenges.

  • Chronic Pain: Use Turning the Mind to accept the ongoing nature of chronic pain and focus on managing it rather than resisting it.

  • Relationship Issues: When facing persistent relationship problems, this skill can help you accept the reality of the situation and work towards constructive solutions.

  • Work Stress: For continuous work-related stress, Turning the Mind can help you accept the pressures and demands without letting them overwhelm you.

Benefits

Practicing Turning the Mind can lead to significant improvements in emotional and mental well-being.

  • Reduced Emotional Suffering: Consistently choosing acceptance decreases the additional pain caused by resisting reality.

  • Increased Resilience: Regularly turning the mind toward acceptance builds resilience, helping you better cope with ongoing challenges.

  • Enhanced Problem-Solving: Acceptance allows you to focus on actionable solutions rather than getting stuck in resistance.

Common Challenges

Practicing Turning the Mind can be difficult, and individuals may encounter several challenges.

  • Frequent Resistance: Continually noticing and turning the mind from resistance to acceptance can be challenging and requires persistent effort.

  • Frustration with Repetition: The need to repeatedly turn the mind can be frustrating for some, as it is not a one-time fix but an ongoing practice.

  • Misinterpretation of Acceptance: There can be confusion between acceptance and resignation, with some fearing that acceptance means giving up on improvement.

By understanding and regularly practicing Turning the Mind, individuals can foster a more resilient and accepting mindset, leading to greater emotional balance and peace.
