Wellness: Rhythms a
Support Group Content
Overview
The purpose of our group meetings is to provide structured support for managing mood disorders, with activities designed to foster self-awareness, education, and community connection. Meetings are held weekly, last an hour, and consist of three sections: mindfulness, sharing, and learning.
Mindfulness
Each session starts with a 5-15 minute mindfulness activity led by a volunteer from the group, who may choose from the list below or introduce another technique. Following the exercise, members share their experiences, discussing insights or feelings that emerged. Here’s a list of some mindfulness activities: Group Mindfulness.
Sharing
Participants then take turns sharing:
Wellness Team efforts (building or progress)
Metrics (such as medication adherence or mood ratings)
General Progress in overall wellbeing or treatment.
This segment might last 10 - 20 minutes and fosters self-awareness and community support by reflecting on personal achievements and challenges. Here’s more details on group sharing: Group Sharing.
Learning
Next is a learning segment focused on topics relevant to mental health management, led by a member or guest speaker, with members taking turns reading and discussing. This section may take 20 - 30 minutes. Here’s an overview of the learning content: Group Learning.

Maintaining regular rhythms, including circadian rhythms, morning and evening routines, and other recurring habits, is crucial for optimal mental and physical health. These rhythms help to stabilize our body clock, enhance sleep quality, improve productivity, and maintain overall well-being. It's important to recognize that personal rhythms can vary, and finding the right balance requires understanding your own body's needs and lifestyle preferences. Consulting with healthcare professionals such as sleep specialists or therapists can provide insights into tailoring routines that align with your specific health requirements.
By focusing on the 5 S's—Support, Systems, Skills, Surroundings, and Supplies—we can optimize our daily and periodic rhythms for better health management.
Support: Engaging with a support network that respects and understands the importance of personal rhythms can be beneficial. This might include family members who support quiet evenings, colleagues who respect work boundaries, or a coach who helps refine your routines.
Systems: Implementing systems that reinforce your natural rhythms enhances daily functioning. This could involve setting consistent wake-up and bedtime hours to support your circadian rhythm, planning weekly meal preps, or scheduling regular exercise sessions.
Skills: Developing skills to adjust and adhere to beneficial routines is key. Learning how to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and relax can directly impact the success of your daily and periodic rhythms. Resources like time management workshops or relaxation technique classes can be very helpful.
Surroundings: Your environment plays a crucial role in supporting your rhythms. Optimizing your living and workspace to accommodate smooth transitions between different parts of your day—such as a well-organized kitchen for meal preps or a calm bedroom for winding down—can significantly enhance routine adherence.
Supplies: Certain tools and supplies can make maintaining rhythms easier and more enjoyable. This might include using light therapy lamps to support your circadian rhythm, utilizing planners for scheduling, or investing in quality kitchen tools for efficient meal preparation.
Examples:
Julia's Rhythmic Rebalance
Julia, a freelance graphic designer, often found herself working at erratic hours, which disrupted her sleep and reduced her productivity. Realizing the need for change, she consulted a sleep specialist to understand how to better align her routines with her circadian rhythm. With professional guidance, she established a consistent bedtime and wake-up routine, and restructured her work hours to optimize daylight exposure. Julia also engaged her family to support her new schedule by ensuring evenings were calm and conducive to relaxation. She invested in a light therapy lamp to regulate her exposure to light, aiding her body clock adjustment. Over time, these changes not only improved Julia’s sleep quality but also her daily productivity and overall well-being.
Michael's Systematic Approach to Well-Being
Michael, an IT consultant, struggled with maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which often left him feeling overwhelmed and stressed. To manage his time more effectively, he developed a system of routines that segmented his day into clear blocks of work, exercise, and relaxation. He participated in a time management workshop to hone his scheduling skills and learned relaxation techniques to effectively wind down. Michael optimized his apartment to support these routines, with a dedicated workspace and a relaxation area. He also used a digital planner to keep track of his commitments and ensure he adhered to his new rhythms. This systematic approach allowed Michael to enhance his mental and physical health, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.
Discussion Questions:
How have you utilized support networks to maintain your personal rhythms, and what impact has this had on your daily life?
What systems have you established to uphold your circadian rhythm and other routines, and how effective have they been?
Which skills have you developed that help you stick to your routines and manage your time effectively?
How have changes to your surroundings or environment supported or hindered your daily rhythms?
What are some essential supplies that have facilitated your adherence to routines and rhythms? To wrap up the meeting, include a moment for members to share their an optional weekly commitment — a specific action they plan to take in the coming week to enhance their well-being or treatment. This sharing fosters accountability and support within the group.
Afterward, allocate some time for members to socialize. This allows everyone to strengthen connections, exchange personal insights, and discuss any remaining thoughts informally, enhancing the supportive community atmosphere.
